ipod newbie questions?

Hello!

I am new to this, my dad gifted me ipod and I have no idea how to get my videos on it. any help would be greatly appreciated, and also I am afraid of updating my ipod from another computer, for the fact that I might mess up few songs I have already transferred onto it. Is there any way I can lock in the data that I already have without losing it?
